Counselling for couples and other relationships
Counselling helps people work through problems that occur in every
marriage or relationship. One of the myths that pervades society is that
if only one could find the 'right' person the perfect relationship will
follow. This is untrue. Relationships are challenging and require
effort; and even the best of relationships face difficult periods. Most
relationships share some common features but each relationship is unique.
We offer a supportive and respectful environment in which to consider
both individuals and to talk about the situation that each of you find
yourselves in. We prefer to meet you together in the first session and
will encourage you to use the space to think about and discuss what you
are experiencing. As with any counselling, couples presenting for
treatment might find the first session a little confronting, but it is
important to know that we will work together to set a suitable pace.
Relationships tell us a great deal about ourselves as individuals.
People realise what annoys them, pleases them, and affects them by being
in a relationship with someone else. One of the things we will do in
therapy is to encourage you to think about how you as an individual are
affecting the relationship. We will try to think differently and gain
fresh perspective on the dynamics and difficulties between the two of
you, considering how they have arisen and how things might be be different.
We offer counselling for every kind of relationship. Preliminary
counselling and assessment usually involves a few sessions. However you
will be encouraged to decide whether you feel comfortable to continue
after the first session. At the end of the assessment we will discuss
and decide on the most appropriate option and that involves whether and
how to continue with counselling or stop at that point.
If people decide to continue with counselling we recommend that it is
done on a regular basis in order to take advantage of the momentum that
is created.
